My name is David Hoffman. I teach English and journalism at Averett University, but I have two side interests - writing and photography. I also enjoy walking daily with my English setter, Sadie, and my wife, Elizabeth, on the Danville, Virginia, Riverwalk. As a novice to studying nature, I am fascinated by the slightest facets of the great outdoors, but most of my pictures are of birds - I don't know a lot about them, but I am learning more and enjoying taking pictures of them daily. I also take pictures of plants, other animals, and insects. All pictures posted for each day were taken on the day of my blog entry.

A BLUEBIRD IN THE PARK (a villanelle)

This villanelle was inspired by a bluebird we saw before daylight in the park during our daily walk on the Riverwalk.

The bluebird sits upon his house at dark.
It is the start of just another day.
We see the bird a fixture in the park.

My English setter Sadie does not bark;
She quietly watches after I say, "Stay!"
The bluebird sits upon his house at dark.

The image of this bird will leave a mark,
Since later on our walk we pass this way.
We see the bird a fixture in the park.

The contrast of the blue and black is stark
Upon this budding morning in mid-May.
The bluebird sits upon his house at dark.

Do baby birds within this house embark
Upon their short life's time of growth and play?
We see the bird a fixture in the park.

We walk on past this place near where we park,
And leave the woods and see the sun's first ray.
The bluebird sits upon his house at dark.
We see the bird a fixture in the park.
